Measures to aid New solar on public lands
Hundreds of thousands of Associated Press of acres of public lands are study for their potential as sites for solar, Ken Salazar, the interior secretary, said Monday. Secretary the Interior Ken Salazar announced Monday measures to accelerate the development of solar energy on public lands in the West.
Mr. Salazar, appearing in Las Vegas with Harry Reid, Majority Leader in the Senate, said that 670,000 hectares of land managed by the Bureau of Land Management (an agency of the Ministry of Interior) will be studied to determine whether they could support large networks of energy Sun.
Twenty-four parcels of land in six states - Nevada, Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah - are being studied. Maps the earth will soon be published in the Federal Register. Mr. Salazar also announced the opening of a new "office of the Interior renewable energy coordination" in Nevada, to address the energy demands from renewable developers to build on public land more quickly. The Office will also begin to consider the environmental impacts of both projects solar panels in Nevada, "said Salazar.
