Wednesday, October 21, a revolutionary history took place in Aurora, Colorado.
A Once completed, the 74-acre Solar Technology Acceleration Center, or SolarTAC, will become one of the largest solar technology testing facilities in the United States, offering a comprehensive and integrated way to test the commercial viability of solar photovoltaic technologies ranging from simple to more utility-scale concentrating solar power options.
With over 300 sunny days per year of sunshine and a value of 5.0 (on a scale of 2.0 to 6.0 in the contiguous United States), flat ground, the site and access to Denver and Denver International Airport to make a win-win for energy solar and collaboration of seven partners - everyone involved in energy research and production - proves that solar power is ready and ready to join mainstream energy generation.
Partners include the City of Aurora, Spain-based Abengoa Solar, Kansas City, Missouri-based Midwest Research Institute (manager SolarTAC) Beltsville, MD SunEdison, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Xcel Energy (serving Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, North and South Dakota, Colorado, New Mexico and Texas), Colorado School of Mines, Colorado Renewable Energy Collaboratory (or crew, affiliated with the University of Colorado, Boulder), Palo Alto, California-based Electric Power Research Institute, or EPRI, and - more recently - Golden Colorado National Renewable Energy Laboratory, a research arm of the Department of Energy is headquartered in Washington DC
Located on the newly designated 1762 acres Aurora Campus for Renewable Energies, dedicated to research and development on alternative energy technologies to produce energy without creating greenhouse gas emissions, the site is part of the City of Aurora's master plan for development.
Aurora, who paid $ 10 million for the land five years ago, plans to rent at SolarTAC, whose facilities and sponsor research in three areas: property owners (whose results are not shared, common, in which research is shared among participants or entities interested and public research, which can be shared with anyone interested to follow the evolution of solar energy.
The only partner that stands out is Xcel Energy, a utility owned by investors. Xcel Energy also offers a solar energy program participation by taxpayers rewards solar, which costs taxpayers about.35 cents per month, but pay $ 2 per watt for installing solar energy systems, and a REC (Renewable Energy credit) a fee of $ 2.50 per watt, which cover about half the cost of a 2 - 3-kilowatt system.
