What type of LED should I use?

I noticed a 8V 650mA solar cell open voltage and short-circuit and I use it to recharge my iPhone on the fly while outside of IM. My circuit has a regulator to convert 5V> 5V 8V to recharge the phone. I also have resistance to power the two USB data pins + and -. I tested it and it works, but I realize that I need a diode to prevent battery of phones from entering the solar cell. What kind of diode do I? I think the 1N4001 But Im not sure. (I want to continue 500mA @ 5V goes into the phone to load)

I did not read carefully the original question. No, strike that, I guess I hardly read at all. I thought you had two different applications: (1) charging a battery using the unregulated output, or (2) to provide regulated 5V to a device. If you have a given voltage source V1, and you use a card through the regulator back to V2, and your equipment draws a certain amount of current I, the total amount of energy "wasted" is (V1 – V2) x I watts. Adding a diode upstream regulator will not change that. Part power that previously had been wasted by the regulator will now be wasted in the diode, but the total waste will remain the same. You still might want to use a Schottky diode well. You say that your solar cell can produce 8V 0A and 0V to 0.65A. I wonder how many volts it will make your current target of 0.5? Maybe not even five. Maybe even five years. Who knows. Every little bit counts, and the Schottky earn you an additional quarter a volt or so on the 1N4001.
