The surface area of the Earth is 510,072,000 square kilometers. Half of those receive sunlight at any particular time (assume no clouds, which is something that never happens). So 255,036,000 square kilometers receive energy from sunlight. Each sq. km. is 1000X1000 or 1,000,000 square meters. Multiplying the 256,036,000 by 1 million you get 256,036,000,000,000 square meters of sunlit surface area. Multiply that by 1400 watts to get your total energy, which comes to 358,450,400,000,000,000 watts or 358,450,400 gigawatts of power ( a gigawatt is a billion watts).
