Any advice on solar power?

My wife and I are about to build a house in Lamb's Valley in the Hunter region of NSW. The power company is looking at charging us almost $100,000 to get on the grid. This has led us to look closely into the solar option. We had looked at this option initially but considered it too expensive at that point in time because of the power I consume in my work, but since then the price of going on the grid has almost doubled, making solar with wind and diesel backup look a lot more viable. My work involves using a network of 4 high powered pcs,. often running flatout 24/7. A a result, the peak loads sometimes reach 50kwhs per day, with an average of around 45kwhs per day. I'm hoping to get the average down to around 35-40.

Is there anyone out there using a solar system to produce similar amounts of power?

If so, how successfull has it been & is it realistic to set it up for under $100,000?

I'm ignorant of how far south NSW is, but if the yearly sun is similar to where I live in California, 45 kWh a day would be a 10 kW array, which would be $40,000 US installed, after rebates. I'm also ignorant of the incentives in your area, or what the AUS-US conversion rate is. (There's a lot I don't know.) Add battery backup, and considering that you must run in winter at the same power, the price could easily exceed $100,000 US.

Off-grid installations are usually low-powered. I'm unaware of anyone that big that is completely off the grid.

Is there any possibility of hydro or wind power in your area? Also, would it be possible to lease servers in the city, and live a low-energy life in Lamb's valley?
