How much does a solar panel system for your roof costs in the U.S.?
I have seen and heard of these companies that install solar panels on your roof and they say depending on how it is sunny where you live, your electricity bill will be considerably reduced and could even generate as much power your electric meter will reverse and electric company pay you for excess power generated. So my question is, how one of these preparations for your solar power cost?
My colleague San Jose, California, installed a solar photovoltaic system on his house several years ago. The cost of installation is a little over $ 30,000. The maximum capacity of the system was 3,000 watts. Its annual production of electricity was about 4000 kWh per year. It funded the system with a second loan of his house with an interest rate equal to prime rate. This rate is adjustable and rose to 8.25% by year. The cost of interest on the loan is $ 2,475 per year. (0.0825 times $ 30,000 = $ 2.475) The interest cost per kilowatt hour is about: 61.88cents per kilowatt-hour. This does not include maintenance (which was important) or depreciation. ($ 2.475 divided by 4,000 kWh = 61.88 cents per kilowatt-hour). I think 61.88 cents per kilowatt-hour is rather high. The utility that I use is one of the most expensive utilities in the U.S. and they charge me 17.3 cents per kilowatt hour of electricity. It is much less than the cost of electricity my colleague for his solar photovoltaic system. I realize it is very difficult to obtain accurate data on the costs of these systems. Recently I had the opportunity to speak with a vendor who sells these systems. Question I asked him why it is so difficult to obtain accurate data on the costs of these systems. The seller responded with what I say is rather remarkable candor. The seller said that if people knew how little electricity these systems produce, how much maintenance they need and how they really cost nobody would buy them. Here in Silicon Valley, we have a term for people who absolutely must have the latest technology, regardless what it costs. They are called "early adoptors" Who are adoptors early? These are people who have more money than they know what to do with. They must have the latest gadget and they do not care how much it costs. Solar photovoltaic systems are definitely "start adoptors "solar photovoltaic systems are not yet ready for the general public.
