What happens to your energy / hot water if you use solar energy and the sky is cloudy for several days in a row?
I used to have a solar water heater 15-20 years ago and it worked OK when it was sunny (of course!). But if it was cloudy / rainy for several days in a row, there was no hot water when it was needed most. Schemes Modern work better, or is this still an issue?
Most solar heating of water are installed in a preheater water heater backup. The collectors heat water in a super-insulated storage tank. The production of hot water that goes to the entry Cold water / hot backup, oil electricity, gas, whatever. Thus, the days of rain, the tank is insulated to avoid not lose much heat it makes, but it may send water to 90 degrees your water heater backup instead of 50 degrees you get from the city or well. That's 40 degrees less than the backup needs to heat, but still continues to provide hot water at home. But the days of sun, your hot backup does not need to switch to all. Many people actually turn the backup off in the summer.
