Portable Power Packs
portable power supplies have been around for a while but they are beginning to gain popularity, partly because their cost has declined and because they are extremely useful products. Personally, I have a Xantrex 300 plus and have used several times. Once on a hot summer day in a mall, a man having a bad day to ask if I could help to revive its car. I pulled my Xantrex Power Pack 300, which had been in the trunk for almost a year, attached the included jumper cables to his car and Volia, his car is started the place.
A power supply is a device that has a powerful sealed battery, an inverter, jumper cables, a DC power receptacle (cigarette lighter style) and an outlet. It also includes a fluorescent light with two tubes and a small pump with pressure gauge to inflate your tires. The hours of battery 20-amp battery (with 400 and 300 and more) will power a cordless telephone Over 40 hours up to a laptop computer for six hours and a portable stereo for a maximum of 25 hours on a fully charged battery. They can be recharged from a standard wall outlet with the included AC charger.
There are several sizes of power supplies portable, 300, 400, 600 and 1500. The model number indicates the size of the UPS - 300 watts, 400 watts to 600 watts and 1500 watts respectively. The power number is also the amount of peak AC power is available. Each size has a battery with a rating of different ampere-hour. The 300 and 400 have a battery 20 amp hour. The 600 has a battery of 28 amperes has 1500 hours and a battery of 51 ampere-hours. It is not as mobile as other models, but packs a considerable punch. All batteries for all models are waterproof and will not spill. All energy packs include a handle and are very mobile. The 300 weighs only 20 pounds but the enormous weight of 1500 pounds in 60. This is why 1500 is the only model with wheels.
All power supplies have the same basic features, but the models with more extra features. The 400R has radio. The 600hd includes radio, digital alarm clock and multiple outlets. There is even a model with a removable solar panel. Just a little research on features and power you might need will pay long term.
Portable power supplies are great to use as a backup for quick-start a car or to illuminate an area on a dark road. They will keep a cell phone or a GPS loaded with the drain the car battery. There are also many uses that are just plain fun. Take the long summer and little league game plugging in a fan. Take a campground and a plug in electric cooktop or use for extra light.
